An innovative three-day training workshop was organized at Dehradun to develop convergence of the ongoing literacy programmes with Self-help Groups (SHGs), micro-credit and insurance. Key Resource Persons (KRPs), one male and one female, representing Zila Saksharta Samities of each of the thirteen districts of Uttaranchal attended this workshop.

Uttaranchal being a hill State is highly prone to natural calamities. In addition, the people living in remote villages do not have access to health and veterinary services because of its hazardous topography. Therefore, in this light micro insurance of the self-help group members, livestock, and physical assets assumes greater importance.

This workshop was organized at Dehradun by the State Resource Centre for Adult Education (SRC-AE) for Uttaranchal.

The workshop commenced with a detailed briefing on the concept of SHGs, process of formation including framing of their bylaws, rules, regulations, and conflict resolution. Subsequently, the concept of micro insurance was introduced to the participants. Successful case studies about SHGs from across Uttaranchal were also shared with the participants. Information was also provided regarding the functions and responsibilities of SHG functionaries, accounts and record keeping. Apart from these emphasis was placed on effective communication skills for better functioning.

On the concluding day, discussions centered around various government schemes including Panchayati Raj and small savings. Mr. Arvind Mishra, Assistant Director, Small Savings Department, Government of Uttaranchal, Dehradun, facilitated this session. Ms. Gitanjali Dhaundhiyal, Mr. Arvind Kumar Sharma and Ms. Rachna Bhandari were the resource persons in this workshop.
