Women gets 50% Reservation in Panchayat

Uttarakhand is the first state in the country to pass the bill titled “The Uttarakhand Panchayat Law (Amendment) Bill 2008” a historic move, which has brought about 50% reservation in Panchayats and double term at the Pradhan level.

PRAGATI’s efforts to bring about 50% reservation for women and double term in Panchayats aware highly lauded in a letter to the organisation by the Uttarakhand Chief Minister Maj. Gen. B.C. Khanduri. He further mentioned that PRAGATI’S stance to fight for women's rights, justice, and equality would facilitate the Uttarakhand government in bringing about fundamental progress and solutions to the tribulations in the state.

Panchayat elections due in May 2008 will now be fought on an equitable platform an important prerequisite for social, economic and political development. The organization will strive towards creating a support mechanism for the women in the forthcoming elections.

“The constant struggle will continue and yield concrete results that will involve social change, and more fundamentally, the fight for women's rights, justice, and equality.”
