The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personal, Public Grievances, Law and Justice under the Chairmanship of Dr. E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan visited the Legal Literacy camp organized by RLEK for Elected Women Panchayati Raj Representatives (EWRs). As many as eighty EWRs participated in this one-day camp. The camp witnessed interactive deliberations whereby the participants put forth issues of concern and the members of the Committee provided possible solutions to the same.

The participants stated that the ‘Legal Literacy Initiatives’ undertaken by the organization are an effort towards women empowerment in its true sense and the medium of panchayats for such endeavors not only ensures sustainability but also percolates such efforts to the grass-root level. The EWRs stated that there were various impediments which were hampering their functioning and the main being that Uttarakhand still follows the Panchayati Raj Act of its parent state Uttar Pradesh. To this the Committee replied that Uttarakhand had a distinct socio-economic and topographical profile and therefore having a separate Panchayat Raj Act for the State was of utmost importance and they would put forth this matter before the Chief Minister.

Subhadra Devi, Pradhan, Bhagwantpur, Block Sahaspur put forth that the present legal system was unresponsive to the needs of the rural poor because of the cost, time and accessibility factors. She further stated what was required was to revitalize the institution of Nyaya Panchayats in order to facilitate participatory and people oriented justice at the grass-root level. The committee assured that the issues raised would be addressed and the views put forth by the EWRs would help them in strengthening the legal system to provide justice to all.
