Women gets 50% Reservation in Uttarakhand
The exertion on the State government of Uttarakhand by the organisation for the demand of 50% reservation for women in Local Self Governance has finally been recognized.
It is a momentous gift on the eve of Women’s Day with the announcement by the state government of Uttarakhand for 50% reservation for women in the Panchayats. This is not a victory for us at PRAGATI (Panchayati Rule and Gender Awareness Training Institute) but a way forward for the 4 million women of the state who have consistently placed their demand for it.The State government now intends to formally announce this in the on going budget session of the Vidhan Sabha.
The relentless effort of advocacy and lobbying by PRAGATI has resulted in this historic achievement for the State. We are proud of the fact that the Panchayat Elections 2008 would be now fought on an equitable platform.
“The constant struggle will continue and yield concrete results that will involve social change, and more fundamentally, the fight for women's rights, justice, and equality.”
