Orientation to convention on the Rights of Person with disabilities

“Demand of the day is not sympathy but boosting of morale and bringing out the brilliant qualities of the disabled persons,” remarked Chief Guest, Mr. R. R. Agarwal, District and Session Judge, Dehradun, while inaugurating the one-day workshop.

National Institute for the Visually Handicapped collaborated with Rural Litigation & Entitlement Kendra to conduct a one-day workshop on “Orientation to convention on the Rights of Person with disabilities” in RLEK auditorium.

“Uttarakhand has 2 lakh persons, more than the total number of persons with disability in seven sister states of North East, a State Policy on disability still does not exist. In such circumstances, the persons with disabilities have been denied of their fundamental rights to equality and life with dignity,” mentioned Mr. Avdhash Kaushal, Chairperson, RLEK, while welcoming all the guests and the participants, including Judicial Officers, Advocates, Law Faculty and students from various Law Colleges and Visually Handicapped participants from National Institute for Visually Handicapped.

During the workshop, three thought provoking sessions were held on “International Convention on Rights Of Persons With Disabilities”, “Myths and Facts” and “Legal safeguards in India for Persons with Disability” followed by a heated Open House discussion and question answer session. The sessions were presided by Dr. Priya Zadu, social activist, Dr. Sushma Dutta, State Immunization Officer, Mrs. Beena Pathak, Senior Advocate, Uttarakhand High Court and the speakers were from RLEK’s legal cell.

The workshop immensely raised the awareness level, sensitized the participants towards person with disabilities. Dr. Anand Sharma, Director, Meteorological Department, distributed certificates to the participants.
