One literacy worker from each of the 13 districts of the state were honoured today by the State Resource Centre for Adult Education at Dehradun. These literacy workers, who were nominated by the District Magistrate and the secretary of Zilla Saksharta Samitis of each district, were honoured for making invaluable contributions in the field of literacy.
The chief guest, Mr. Narendra Singh Bhandari, Minister for Education, honoured these literacy workers and said that in the next two years Uttaranchal would be at par with Kerala as far as the literacy rate was concerned.
Repeating the pledge for total literacy to all children he said that, "the Uttaranchal government was committed towards the cause of promoting literacy in the state and greatly appreciated the support and cooperation of likeminded individuals and organisations."
"Superstition, which is so intricately woven into rural communities is a by-product of illiteracy and thus a move should be made not only to diminish effects of the same but also to increase means of education," he said. He also added that the state government was taking immediate steps to ensure that the schools have adequate teachers and in this direction 223 teachers had already been employed and 2000 more would be employed in the near future.
M.C. Pant, the Director of Education, Uttaranchal, commended the State Resource Centre for their committed efforts. He stressed on the need of literacy as a basic tool and termed it as a significant step towards sustainable development.

Mr. Pant highlighted the efforts made by RLEK in the direction of education for the nomadic forest dwelling Van Gujjar community and said that much could be learnt from such exemplary initiatives.
"The state government has pledged to reach absolute literacy levels in the state by the year 2005 and the need of the hour was to include the unreached in the education programmes," he said.
Ms. Bindu Thapliyal, Director SRC, explained that 8th September was declared as International Literacy Day by UNESCO in 1966 and since then this day is celebrated as such. "The main purpose behind the declaration is to build an active world consensus against illiteracy," she said. She also said that each year SRC, Dehradun celebrated this day by honouring literacy workers.
This year, the awards were given to 13 recipients, each representing a district of Uttaranchal. The awardees included Dr. Vijaya Dhaundhiyal (Almora), Mr. Keshav Datt Joshi (Champawat), Mr. Bhaskar Datt Bhatt (Pithoragarh), Mrs. Sarita Sharma (UdhamSingh Nagar), Dr. Mohammad Salim Ansari (Dehradun), Mr. Manoj Tiwari (Nainital), Miss Kavita Panwar (Chamoli), Dr. Shiv Dayal Joshi (Tehri), Mr. Nandan Singh Almiya(Bageshwar), Mrs. Usha Yogi (Haridwar), Mr. Purnanand Pandey (Rudraprayag), Mr. Naseem Ahmed (Pauri) and Mr. Nag Datt (Uttarkashi).
Four volunteers from the Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra were also rewarded for their efforts in direction of innovative literacy campaigns amongst the nomadic, Van Gujjar tribe. These are Mr. Puran Chand Joshi (Pauri), Mr. Suman Kumar Chamoli (Haridwar), Mr. Gyan Chand (Dehradun) and Mr. Satish Chandra Lekhwal (Dehradun).
A cultural programme was also put up by a folk team from Nainital.
