A new RLEK primary school was inaugurated in a remote village in Tehri district, Bhatwari in Jaunpur Block, on Saturday, 26 May 2007. This is the 16th such school set up by the RLEK and the fourth such in the district.
The glow and the hope for a bright future on the faces of 110 girls and boys, who donned their uniform for the first time, was unmistakable as Khajan Das, MLA Dhanaulti, inaugurated the school.
Khajan Das lauded RLEK’s efforts towards empowering and giving voice to the women’s Self Help Group set up by RLEK, who will be managing the school. He especially praised RLEK Chairperson Avdhash Kaushal for his work in promoting education, and several other social welfare activities, over the last three decades.
He requested RLEK to open similar model schools in Khathiyur, and other areas inhabited by SCs and STs. He assured support to RLEK in its mission of “reaching the unreached and including the excluded.” The villagers’ happiness knew no bounds when the MLA announced a pucca road to this model school.
Babbo Devi of Bhatwari said, “I am overwhelmed that now our children would be able to go to school. It will be particularly important for our girls.”
The Bhatwari School is the outcome of a unique partnership with Michel Coppoolse and Louise Broeksma of IndianRose Foundation, a Netherlands based organization, and the local community, who donated the land.
The children presented an impressive cultural programme at the inauguration in front of large gathering, from nearby villages.
To give an impetus to English language teaching, that is now compulsory at the primary level, each year a team of voluntary English teachers from Ireland, England, and Scotland impart enriching and stimulating trainings on English reading and writing skills for the teachers from the RLEK Schools.
“Education is the birth right of all children and we will not only endeavour towards laying the foundation for a quality education for the marginalised, but also introduce computer education to bring the children into the mainstream of education and technology”, said Avdhash Kaushal Chairperson RLEK.
